Bright Morning Stars, the fifth single from Bonny Light Horseman, was released yesterday in the lead-up to their forthcoming self-titled debut album. For this track, the collaborative project of Anaïs Mitchell, Josh Kaufman and Eric D. Johnson brought Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon on board to lend some harmonies. Listen below…
The melodic, timeless piece of folk music has a magnificence to it, driven by beautiful harmonies. It is awe-inspiring, yet remains light, avoiding any claustrophobia from the rich history woven into the lyrics and music. Vernon has praised the releases of Bonny Light Horseman so far: “I am beside myself, shaking my head when I hear this music.” There is certainly a mysterious spirituality around Bright Morning Stars, something chilling yet enticing and magical.
The band, formed at Vernon’s Eaux Claires festival in 2018 (it was only right that the musician made an appearance on the album) have said they are “mixing the ancient, mystical medium of transatlantic traditional folk music with a contemporary, collective brush.” The self-titled debut album – a re-imagining of traditional folk songs, with a few new additions – is out TOMORROW (Jan. 24) on 37d03d Records.
