Yesterday, Phoebe Bridgers announced her next album Punisher will be released June 19 on Dead Oceans, right before dropping her latest single Kyoto.
Kyoto is a taste of what’s to come from Punisher. According to Bridgers, the song is about “impostor syndrome”. A narrative; detailed yet ambiguous, told in Bridgers’ trademark charming yet dark, unique indie-folk style. The lyrics and vocals are as melancholic and morbid as ever (“I’m going to kill you, if you don’t beat me to it”) as well as warm in Bridgers’ trademark small-town approach when it comes to the minutia (“…with my little brother, he said you called him on his birthday, you were off by like ten days, but you get a few points for trying…”).
Bridgers performed the song yesterday evening on Jimmy Kimmel’s Live From the Lavatory series, sat in her bathtub (staying at home as we all should be!). Take a look below…
Kyoto is out now so go give it a spin, and get ready for the release of Punisher this summer.
