Two new recruits to the andfriends Records family, Dublin-based Jehnova and lod have released hwlcky, featuring fellow Dublin-based low-fi artist (and creative director of andfriends) Uly.
The track is a fusion of both Jehnova and lod’s versatile styles and influences. Hip-hop lyricist Jehnova’s influences range from Nas to 2Pac, and from 90s-era boombap to his early years in South Africa, where jazz and soul were thrived. Joining forces with producer lod, whose main inspiration is the late J Dilla, this collaboration is a big new project for the duo who have more music on the way!
Jehnova said of the track: “I wanted to capture how in my life, I feel like I’ve gotten used to the loop of the everyday; doing the same shit, getting trapped inside a ‘things will never change’ state of mind. Success, independence and freedom feel impossible to attain when you’re trapped in that kind of routine. The progression of the lyrics is liberation from that, understanding how significant a new day can be — if you choose to look at it as such.”
